The antique model for the body of Pygmalion’s statute was the Venus de Milo, a figure of Aphrodite in the Louvre of circa 100 BC, which Normand had seen in Paris on his honeymoon. The facial features appear to be those of Normand’s wife — suggesting that for Normand, at least, Pygmalion’s fantasy really could come true…

In the instance you may wish to read this, I wanted to...

To you, to whomever may be reading this,

In the instance you may wish to read this, I wanted to leave a note dedicated to the reader and his future. I do not normally press myself to do this, nor try to reach any stranger on a personal level, but as far as experiences went, I wanted to leave a note to ‘whomever it may concern’ in regards to their future; And I do not mean a future that is long far ahead, but even tomorrow, or a minute from now.

Attain your goals, no matter how small they may seem.

Goals should not limit themselves to careers or high-end achievements. Anything that gives you a simple satisfaction such as reading a book, following through a recipe, or simple taking a walk outside is good enough in the short-term. You should never allow anyone else spare judgement over what you make of your day - in the end you are attaining these goals for yourself, not for the satisfaction of others.

And for long-term goals, do not allow anyone to settle those decisions for you. A majority of people, yes bear a difficulty in making a final decision, but one must remember, a decision bears as much importance as a mistake - if an error is made, you can simply fall back on the decision you left out, and continuously try again. Limitation, not taking a risk, and simply remaining stationary is what you must constantly avoid - else regret will mark you.

Fear, out of both ignorance, avoidance and lack of knowledge is what makes the outside world a ‘horrid place.’

From personal experience, turning my head away from topics that put me at unease, only gave me more unease in the future as I had not ‘grown to understand them.’ I believed that if I simply closed my eyes to all my fears, I will remain catatonic, and avoid situations related to those fears entirely. Upon facing the jaws of that irrational threat, the fear soon subsides due to learning more about it. Of course, I do not expect fear to disappear in an instance, especially to those who bear a phobia that leaves them petrified, however, if there is an instance where one can overcome it, an instant where there is the remote possibility one can lessen it, wouldn’t it be better than to ask the world to try and mold itself around your inhibitions? Because, as I’m sure many know, the world is not kind enough to accustom everyone, so in the end preparation is truly key, wishing for change in something so vast to suit you, is not.

Vary your relationships with others, keep an open mind - however do not let those mark your thoughts and suffocate your true personality

there will be people who dislike you for who you are, and those who will like you for who you are. There is no need to change your personality according to what those people desire from you, else you will simply be lying to yourself enough to make yourself constantly ill, asking question upon question ‘who am I, really? is this who I am?’

But this should not stop you from seeking friendships and acquaintances with a number of people - different perspectives open one’s mind further - simply limiting yourself to your own experiences, however does not. You too, in return, will be expanding that person’s knowledge with your own experience, just the same.

Knowledge is found even in the smallest of instances - do not let it escape.

Experiences, animation, books, the ramblings of another, talks from other people’s experiences. Knowledge is vast and continuously expands itself in a form of genres. Do not simply limit yourself to one medium. Continue to look further.

Do not let academic achievement mark your ability

In the end, they are grades. Experiences is what matter, going out in the field, practicing your talents, reading upon your abilities to expand yourself further. There are many who gain their abilities outside their academic grade and do far better than those who achieved high marks in an academic institution. So as long as you have the will to drive yourself forward, your ability will grow strong.

And most importantly, focus on yourself more than other’s. Do not feel guilty for doing so, as I am certain a number of individuals barely pay heed to their own health and needs. How will you be able to assist others, if you are unable to assist yourself? As soon as you gain that strength, then you will gain the will to assist others without pressing yourself down.

I do not expect anyone to take my words seriously, but at least I’ll be leaving knowing I contributed to something in my long absence.

My absolute favorite has to be Simon Schama’s documentary about him, where, he not only speaks about him in a manner of ‘distaste’ and absolute sarcasm (you’re supposed to be educating your audience, not show your personal feelings over a man who died over 5 centuries ago) but also spouted out the most ridiculous things, without adding any sources, save for one ‘fact’ regarding what he said in a court record (something along the lines of ‘I will cut your testicles off and fry them in oil’).

His most ridiculous had to be ‘He had a dog named ‘Crow’ (not even an Italian name for a dog, mind you.) who he taught how to stand up on his hind legs’

He also made no effort to mention his two companions, Mario Minniti (who later went to Sicily) or Onorio (the Architect).

If you do wish to learn more about Caravaggio on the lines of fact and not baseless assumptions, I recommend books at most, books with viable sources - not documentaries such as these. At best, Italian books translated into English (unless you are fluent or have a good grasp of Italian.)

abystle:
